She became known for her roles in the movies Yanks, Moon 44, and Cutter's Way. In 1998, she played Mary-Ellen Floyd in Judas Kiss.

She met Alan Rickman while attending a college party, and he encouraged her to audition for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which sparked her success.

She won a Best Actress Award for her role as Mo in the 1981 film Cutter's Way.

She was in a relationship with Richard Moxon in 2012.

She was almost cast opposite of Gene Hackman in the 1980 film All Night Long, but her part was given to Barbra Streisand.
