An Austrian-American novelist, translator, and children's book author, she is best known for Shakespeare's Kitchen, a 2007 novel that was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
She grew up in Austria until Hitler annexed the country, forcing her family to flee.
She received the PEN/ O. Henry Prize for Making Good, a 2008 short story.
She married David Segal in 1961.
