Movie actress known for her roles in Imitation of Life and Uncle Tom's Cabin. She acted in over 100 films, mainly cast as a maid, servant, nanny, or as a slave. She is known as embodying the "mammy" role, a racist trope in early American cinema. Her career is significant in the history of cinema.
She graduated from Pasadena High School and began working as an assistant for Hollywood star Leatrice Joy.
She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1976.
She married Leroy Moore in 1952, with whom she stayed with until her death.
