ABOUT MARSHAWN MCCARREL
Civil rights activist remembered for his work in the Black Lives Matter movement, including his protests of the police force responsible for the shooting death of Missouri teenager Michael Brown . He took his own life on the steps in front of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio in February 2016.
He grew up in Hilltop, a particularly crime-heavy neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Franklin Heights High School in 2011.
He founded the Feed the Streets charity after spending three months without a home.
He brought his mother Leatha to the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles three days before his death. He is survived by brothers MarQuan, Khyri and Jamar as well as a step-brother named Kavon.
He dedicated his life to protesting the killings of young African-Americans like Eric Garner as a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement.
