ABOUT MARTIN CARTER
Guyanese poet who is widely considered one of the most significant Caribbean writers. His best-known works include Poems of Affinity and Poems of Resistance from British Guiana.
He joined the civil service and worked for the Post Office and the Prison Service.
He took part in a month-long hunger strike while being detained by the British government.
He grew up with six siblings in Georgetown, Guyana. He married Phyllis Howard in 1953 and subsequently fathered four children.
During a "Live from Lincoln Center" jazz concert that was held in honor of victims of Hurricane Katrina, actor Danny Glover quoted some lines from Carter's poems.
