Screenwriter and playwright, who is best known for his 20 stage-works that have been produced in over 55 countries.
He became obsessed with Broadway after seeing his first performance of Guys and Dolls at just six years old.
He studied under Harold Clurman when he moved to New York in 1960.
His parents, Joseph and Julia, emigrated from Russia.
He and actress, Alfre Woodard , both studied at Boston University.
