An American fiction writer and playwright, she is best known for such novels as Vanished and A Dangerous Woman. She also penned a drama that focuses on the life of Mary Todd Lincoln .
She spent ten years writing her first novel, Vanished, which was finally published in 1988.
She was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
With her husband, Mike, she had five children.
She is often compared to John Steinbeck .
