She attended UC Santa Cruz and later transferred to UCLA . She went on to work as a publicist, where she was encouraged to act by coworkers such as Jason Robards Jr. and Shelley Winters .
She served as a creative consultant for Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins .
She was married to Bruce Crawford Burrell from 1972 to 1979. In 2003, she was remarried to Peter Bergman. The couple remained married until his death in 2012.
Jack Lemmon was one of her early career mentors.
