Matija Skurjeni
ABOUT MATIJA SKURJENI
Painter associated with the Naïve Art movement and known for his artistic use of symbolism and metaphor.
He fought in World War I on both the Russian and Italian fronts. He was wounded at Castel Tessino one year into his service and later contracted malaria.
His work was exhibited at the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art and at the Matija Skurjeni Museum.
He was one of eight children born to a carpenter father. His father was killed while felling a tree, forcing him to quit school and work as a shepherd.
He and artist Petar Grgec were both associated with the Naïve Art movement.
