ABOUT MATTHEW LYON

American Revolutionary War veteran who served as a Representative for Vermont from 1797 to 1801. He also represented the state of Kentucky from 1803 to 1811.

He organized militias and fought in the Revolutionary war, earning the first ethics violation ever issued after he spit in a Congressman's face.

He was arrested and imprisoned for violating the Sedition Act and was elected to Congress while still in jail.

He was married twice, first to Mary Horsford and then to Beulah M. Chittenden. Between the two women, he had twelve children.

He cast one of the crucial votes for Thomas Jefferson when the presidential election of 1800 was decided by the House of Representatives.
