ABOUT MESA SELIMOVIC

The Yugoslav-born author of celebrated post-World War II literature, he is best known for his 1966 novel, Death and the Dervish. His existential works often deal with themes of mortality, individuality, and authority.

He attended the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Philology. During World War II, he was arrested for his anti-fascist activities.

He was a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia.

He was born into a Bosnian family of the Muslim faith. His brother was executed by a firing squad.

He and Aleksandar Hemon are both noteworthy Bosnian writers.
