Politician and Democrat who was the mayor of Chicago from 1976 to 1979. He was also the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.

He attended DePaul University College of Law before practicing law for several years in Chicago.

He dealt with a gravediggers and cemetery owners' strike while mayor.

He married Chicago socialite Heather Morgan in 1977.

He succeeded Richard M. Daley 's father, Richard J. Daley.
