He started working at a factory when he was 16 years old. He needed the daytime to paint, so around 1917, he began working nights.
He was a friend of the Russian-born painter Mark Rothko .
His father was a tanner. He was forced to be the breadwinner for his nine female relatives after his brother-in-law died in 1915. He married art student Sally Michael in 1926.
His work was compared to that of Henri Matisse .
