He was expelled from missionary school for his outspoken views. He later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.
His novel, Le Pauvre Christ de Bomba, was banned by the religious Cameroonian government for its satirical depiction of missionary life.
He married Odile Tobner, a French woman. He died in exile from his homeland.
He was born in the same country as voice actor Michelle Creber .
