Southern Baptist preacher who was one of the most vocal proponents of the temperance movement.
He started his evangelism in Texas, in small communities of Hico and Garland, and moving along the Gulf of Mexico attracting attention with the use of Gospel Cars and other props.
Alcohol abuse was a favorite criticism of his, and he argued that churches emphasizing alcohol abstinence would eventually move public opinion away from liquor consumption.
He had three daughters with his wife Annie Laurie Smith, whom he married following death of his first wife early in their marriage.
One of his converts during a revival in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a young Billy Graham , a future evangelist in his own right.
