She began studying piano at age four and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

Her anthem In the Bulb There Is a Flower was dedicated to her husband, who was diagnosed with cancer around that time.

She married Reverend Ronald E. Sleeth.

She and astronomer Annie Jump Cannon both attended Wellesley College.
