Modern artist whose large-scale landscape paintings of Maine's wilderness evoked the majesty of the state's woodlands.
He earned an M.F.A. in painting from Yale University, where he taught for the next ten years.
His paintings, which sometimes measured 8' x 10', featured subjects such as water, rocky crags, beaver habitats, and trees.
He had four children with his wife Norma.
He and abstract artist Willem de Kooning were contemporaries.
