A biographer, journalist, poet, and novelist, he was known for The Devil and Sonny Liston (biography), In the Hand of Dante (novel), Where Dead Voices Gather (biography), and other works. As a journalist, he frequently penned rock-and-roll-themed articles.
He held a variety of odd jobs before publishing articles in Rolling Stone and other music magazines.
He authored Hellfire, an acclaimed 1982 biography of Jerry Lee Lewis .
He was born into a New Jersey family of Italian and Albanian descent.
He appeared in an episode of the Travel Channel's program, Anthony Bourdain : No Reservations.
