ABOUT NICO HERNANDEZ
Light flyweight boxer who has competed internationally for the United States' boxing team. He earned the bronze medal for the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics fighting in the light flyweight division.
He was first introduced to boxing at age 9, and took an instant liking to the sport. He would go on to earn the gold medal at the 2011 and 2012 National Junior Olympics.
In a profile of him by USA Today, he revealed he would turn professional following his showing at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He was first introduced to boxing, and initially trained, by his father.
He became the first native Wichitan to earn an individual Olympic medal since Jim Ryun did at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
