Nicknamed The Encyclopedia for his amazing technique, he was an integral member of Brazil's 1954, 1958, and 1962 World Cup teams.

He was discovered by chance when he was still serving in the Brazilian Air Force.

He had one of the finest World Cup moments in a 1958 match against Sweden, taking a ball up from the backfield and putting it in the back of the net.

He grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

His impressive international career inspired future Brazilian national team stars like Kaka .
