American poet known for Love in the Time of Anthrax, Synchronicity, and other poetry collections. She published poems in such prominent journals as The Atlantic Monthly and American Poetry Review.
She worked at a New York brokerage firm and later began a career as a nurse.
On the night before she died of cancer, she publicly read from her last collection of poems.
She grew up in New York City as the daughter of Rose and Thomas O'Brien. She later married pharmacist Jack Janus, with whom she subsequently had several children.
Leslie Scalapino is another prominent American poet.
