ABOUT PAUL CADMUS

Best remembered for his drawings and tempera paintings of male nudes, this socially aware, twentieth-century American artist worked primarily in the artistic genre of magic realism. His best-known works include The Seven Deadly Sins (housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Night in Bologna (collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum).

After studying for half a decade at the National Academy of Design, he trained at the famous Art Students League of New York and worked for a time as a commercial artist.

He became famous after painting, on a Works Progress Administration (WPA) assignment, a controversial work titled The Fleet's In!

He was born in New York City to children's book illustrator Maria Latasa and graphic designer Egbert Camus. He was the longtime romantic partner of Jon Andersson, who was featured in much of his artwork.

He and fellow New York-born artist George Tooker both created twentieth-century works of magic realism.
