Famous as a broadcast journalist for Northern Ireland's UTV network, he is also known for his hosting work on BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Northern Ireland.
In the late 1970s, he became one of the first hosts of RTE Radio 2.
Though he was raised Catholic, he later converted to the Presbyterian denomination of Protestantism.
