ABOUT PEDRO GARFIAS

Poet and literary thinker who was a co-founder of the Ultraist movement, which sought to overturn the modernist ideals entrenched in poetry at the time. He also co-founded a literary journal called Horizonte y Tableros. He was part of the Generation of 1927, which generally supported the avant-garde over the traditional. His most famous book of poems, Poesías de la Guerra Civil Española, was written during the Spanish Civil War. He won the National Award for Literature for the book.

In 1918, he began studying law at a university in Madrid but did not finish his degree. His first collection of poems, El Ala del Sur, was published in 1926.

He was forced into exile during the Spanish Civil War, as were most artists and intellectuals. A bronze monument was erected in his honor and stands in Guadalajara, Mexico.

He never married or had children.

Pablo Picasso is another artist who documented The Spanish Civil War through his creative works. Whereas Garfias was a poet, Picasso is famous for portraying the war through his painting Guernica.
