Best known for playing the role of Dan Humphrey on the hit television show Gossip Girl . He later went on to star as Joe in Netflix's You . He's also the lead singer of the indie band known as MOTHXR.

He moved to Hollywood at the age of 11. His first credits were for voice work on the Nintendo 64 video games Mario Golf 64 and Mario Tennis 64.

He and Brad Pitt worked hard to try and get the FIFA World Cup back to the US for either the 2018 or 2022 tournament.

He married fellow musician Domino Kirke in a secret ceremony in 2017. They welcomed a son named James on August 11, 2020. In February 2025, it was revealed they were expecting twins together. He previously dated Zoe Kravitz from 2011 to 2013.

He dated his Gossip Girl co-star Blake Lively for three years until their breakup in 2010.
