ABOUT PETER DUFFY

Remembered for his work in the 1990s on behalf of human rights, this English lawyer fought for the rights of gays and lesbians, victims of torture, and prisoners, among others. Over the course of his career, he spoke before the European Commission of Human Rights and represented Amnesty International and other major human rights organizations.

After earning a law degree from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, he taught for a decade at Queen Mary College, London, before becoming a Lincoln's Inn barrister in the late 1970s.

In the English Court of Appeal, he successfully represented Diane Blood, a woman seeking to conceive a child using genetic material from her deceased husband.

His marriage to Vivienne Furneaux resulted in one son and three daughters. He died in London, England, at the age of forty-four.

He and fellow British barrister Keir Starmer were both involved in major human rights cases.
