Philip D. Appleman
ABOUT PHILIP D. APPLEMAN
American poet, author, and academic who is known for Perfidious Proverbs, Shame the Devil, and other works. His literary honors include the Castagnola Award and a National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowship.
He studied at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan. He joined the military during World War II.
He signed the Humanist Manifesto in 2003.
He married Marjorie Appleman, a playwright. He taught for many years in Indiana University's Department of English.
He became an expert on Charles Darwin and wrote two poetry collections -- Darwin's Ark and Darwin's Bestiary -- dedicated to the renowned naturalist.
