Deaf, American actress who won the 1980 Best Actress Tony Award for her lead role in the Broadway production of Children of a Lesser God.

She was born to deaf parents and grew up the oldest of 9 children, all of whom are also deaf.

She performed a sign language interpretation of the national anthem sung by Jewel at Super Bowl XXXII.

She married Robert Steinberg, and they have two children who are also fluent in American Sign Language.
