He began publishing poems while he was a student at the University of Toronto. His early collections include We are the Light Turning and Dancing in the House of Cards.
He lived in an Augustinian monastery for a time and went on to serve as friar in an Ontario parish.
He was born into an Italian family in Arezzo and was raised in Baltimore, Montreal, and Toronto.
He was Toronto's second Poet Laureate; Dennis Lee was the city's first.
