ABOUT PORTIA WHITE
Canadian opera singer who was named a person of national historic significance by the Government of Canada. She is remembered for recordings like First You Dream.
She was a teacher in the small town of Africville during the 30's.
The Nova Scotia Talent Trust and the Portia White Prize were both created in her honor. In 2007, the East Coast Music Association honored her with a lifetime achievement award.
She was the third of thirteen children born to her mother.
Her nephew is famed playwright George Elliott Clarke .
