Author of The Secret Series and The Bad Books series. He also wrote The Unbelievable Oliver chapter book mysteries. In 2021, he published The Anti-Book, his first book under his real name.

He attended Yale University . He earned an MA in Comparative Literature from University of California, Irvine .

In 2007, he published a fantasy novel called The Name of this Book is Secret. It was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe award for best juvenile mystery. It became a series which has sold millions of copies and has been translated into many languages.

In May 2016, he revealed his real name was Raphael Simon. In 2008, he and his husband Phillip de Leon had twin daughters.

He worked as a staff writer on the Nickelodeon animated series Rocket Power, which featured voice performances by Joseph Ashton and Shayna Fox .
