ABOUT RAMON SANTOS
Filipino composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist, and music teacher who is renowned for his development of contemporary Filipino classical music. In addition to composing music, he was devoted to documenting and studying the music of a variety of native groups within the Philippines. The influence of his ethnomusicological studies throughout the Philippines was noted by critics in his compositions.
Under a Fulbright Scholarship, he studied at Indiana University for his master's degree and attended State University of New York at Buffalo for his doctorate.
In 2014, he was named as a National Artist of The Philippines and given the Order of National Artists of the Philippines, an official governmental order given to Filipinos with significant cultural contributions.
He was born and raised in the city of Pasig, Rizal, in the per-independence Philippines.
Filipino screenwriter Ricky Lee was also named as a National Artists of the Philippines.
