He attended the Royal Academy of Music before becoming a popular figure in the Golden Age of British Music.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame 18 years after his death.

He married his wife Gladys.

He appeared in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress, which starred Gracie Allen .
