ABOUT REBECCA CAUDILL
Kentucky-born children's author whose acclaimed books include Tree of Freedom and A Pocketful of Cricket. Her books, set in the Appalachian region of the United States, document the American pioneer days.
She published her first book, an autobiographical work entitled Barrie and Daughter, in 1943.
She received a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan College in Georgia and a master's degree from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.
She and her husband, James Sterling Ayars, settled in Illinois with their two children.
She and fellow American writer Tasha Tudor both won Caldecott Honors for their works of children's literature.
