He graduated from the University of Notre Dame before pursuing his career.

He became the first sportswriter to win the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1976.

His son, Terence Smith, was a journalist at The New York Times.

He was very critical of Muhammad Ali when the latter refused to serve during the Vietnam War.
