He attended UC Berkeley and the University of Houston, and served in the U.S. Air Force.

He marched in President Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural parade, carrying an American flag and wearing a prototype of NASA's next generation spacesuit.

He married Margie Dotson and had two children.
