Richard Hugo

ABOUT RICHARD HUGO

American poet who is known for the Northwest regional character of works such as The Lady in Kicking Horse Reservoir. His other poetry collections include Death of the Kapowsin Tavern and The Right Madness on Skye.

He served as a bomber pilot in World War II. He subsequently studied creative writing at the University of Washington.

His birth name was Richard Hogan; he took on his stepfather's last name, Hugo, in 1942.

He was married twice: first, to Barbara Williams, and later to Ripley Schemm Hansen.

He and literary contemporary Richard Brautigan were both born in Washington state.
