Richard Wernick
ABOUT RICHARD WERNICK
1977 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer for "Visions of Terror and Wonder." He was best known for his chamber and vocal works.
He began playing the piano at age 11. He studied with Leonard Bernstein , Arthur Berger, and Harold Shapero at Brandeis University.
He was a composition professor for the bulk of his career, teaching at SUNY Buffalo from 1964 until 1965, the University of Chicago from 1965 until 1968, and the University of Pennsylvania from 1968 until 1996.
He married bassoonist Bea Wernick.
His high school music theory teacher helped him meet Irving Fine .
