He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox after graduating from Sheepshead High School in New York.

He moved to third base when Hall of Fame shortstop Luis Aparicio joined the Boston Red Sox.

He had four sons with his wife Elsie.

He had the honor of playing alongside Hall of Fame outfielder Carl Yastrzemski .
