One of MGM's greatest musical minds during Hollywood's Golden Era. He worked as a songwriter, arranger, and supervisor on many musical pictures.
He went to Hollywood with Ethel Merman , writing and arranging her musical work.
He was on the piano at the audition of a young and formed a friendship with her that resulted, three years later, in his arranging the music for two musical starring Garland.
He was born in Hillsboro, Texas, both of his parents of Scots-Irish descent.
He did an adaptation of "You Made Me Love You," which was written for Judy Garland to perform at Clark Gable 's birthday party.
