He began playing guitar at the age of eleven and began exploring the banjo when he was thirteen.
He is a devout Christian and writes many gospel songs.
His father owned a music shop and encouraged him to be a bluegrass musician.
He is a longtime member of the band Alison Kraus and Union Station.
