After studying at the University of Ceylon, she worked as a reporter.

Common themes of her historically-themed romance novels include violence and rape, exotic travel, and the rise from poverty to wealth.

She was born in Sri Lanka to a family of Portuguese and Dutch heritage. She married three times and had four children; with her second husband, Leroy Rogers, she settled in California.

She found early literary inspiration in the historical fiction novels of Alexandre Dumas .
