He became interested in thrifty traveling in 2008, when he flew to Beijing for the Summer Olympics while on break from attending I ndiana University Bloomington.
He once made a first-class, around-the-world trip with Emirates valued at around $60,000 for just $300.
He was born in Pasadena, California.
