He earned a fine arts degree from East Carolina University in 2000. He played with a variety of bands while in college, like Nemo.
He helped The Avett Brothers earn a top ten indie album with The Second Gleam in 2008.
He married Sarah Avett in 2003 and the couple welcomed a daughter named Eleanor.
His song "Famous Flower of Manhattan" was about singer Regina Spektor .
