She studied at Central Collegiate Institute in Regina.
She was actively involved with the American Civil Rights Movement and was one of the creators of the fundraising group Friends of the Black Panthers.
She was married twice and had three children: Thomas Sicks, actor Kiefer Sutherland , and Rachel Sutherland.
She was married to Donald Sutherland from 1966 to 1970.
