Football coach at Saint Mary's College in California who built a powerhouse program that beat better-known rivals like USC and UCLA.

After losing his first football game as a coach 127-0, he started teaching his players the tricks employed by teams like Notre Dame.

He coached St. Mary's basketball and baseball, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame with a 119-58 record over his college football coaching career.

He was born in Ottawa, Illinois.

A showman as well as a coach, he often invited sports celebrities like Babe Ruth on their away trips.
