Sorley MacLean
ABOUT SORLEY MACLEAN
Twentieth-century Scottish poet who is known for From Wood to Ridge, Hallaig, and other works. He frequently wrote in his native Scottish tongue and was an important figure in the Scottish Gaelic Renaissance.
He attended the University of Edinburgh and fought in North Africa during World War II.
His debut poetry collection, Dain do Eimhir agus Dain Eile, is regarded as one of the most significant Gaelic-language works of the twentieth century.
He was married to Renee Cameron and had three daughters.
Author Seamus Heaney discussed MacLean's work in a 1984 film entitled Hallaig. One of MacLean's poems provided the title for the film.
