He studied at both the University of California-Berkeley and Stanford University.
His San Francisco Bay-area home of Bolinas, California was a locale that greatly influenced his poetic development.
He married and became a father during his graduate studies in the late 1960s and 1970s.
He wrote his doctoral dissertation on the poet and author Thomas Campion .
