ABOUT STERLING NORTH

An American children's author, he is best known for Midnight and Jeremiah (1943) and the Newbery Honor-winning Rascal (1963). He also worked as a reporter and editor for the New York Sun and the Chicago Daily News.

He briefly attended the University of Chicago. His best-selling book, Rascal, is a memoir of a year spent with his pet raccoon; his other books similarly introduce readers to the wildlife and landscape of his native Wisconsin.

His book, Midnight and Jeremiah, was made into the Disney movie, So Dear to My Heart, which won an Academy Award for best song.

He grew up on a farm in Edgerton, Wisconsin, sharing it with numerous cats and a St. Bernard named Wowser. He was the grandson of pioneers.

Pauline Clark was another popular children's book author; she wrote The Twelve and the Genii.
