He played in Nottingham Forest's youth system before making his professional debut with Borrowash Victoria.

He twice earned Player of the Year honors for Derby County before ending his career with Lincoln City and Boston United.

His older brother Alan Buckley was a professional soccer manager.

His nephew Adam Buckley became a professional midfielder.
